web|works Web 2.0 Talk
Sorry, everybody, for the delay in putting this up. I know the talk was Thursday and today’s Saturday, but I have a good excuse… I had a helluva time keeping a net connection at the hotel and I’ve been kinda sick. Luckily the worst held off til I was home and had somebody to dote on me. My PowerBook troubles have seemed to disappear, so it must have been something about the Canadian air.
Here are the links to the Javascript libraries I used:
- Prototype Javascript Library
- Scriptaculous Javascript Library (requires Prototype for some things)
- Don’t forget to check out the pretty good docs on the Scriptacuous site, and especially their Prototype docs (incomplete, but I will be pitching in to help…)
Here are links to good FireFox plugins for troubleshooting Ajax stuffs:
Download the presentation:
- Quicktime Movie (Large – 640×480) 3mb
- Quicktime Movie (Small – 320×240 1.56mb
- PDF 3.65mb
The presentation won’t seem nearly as complete as the Interface Design Attacks! one simply because a significant portion of the time was taken up by a live demo. You can download the code and check it out for yourself:
You’ll also need to download the latest Scriptaculous and the latest Prototype included in the Scriptaculous source trunk.
Update! (10/27/05)
You can also see the aforementioned files in action, live, here.
Nice presentation and demos. The MVC info just shed light on Rails for me in a needed way.
I should note: the test files didn’t work on my server (textdrive) unless I commented out: #header(‘Response.Expires = 0’); in the backend file.
I’d love to see one example with database connectivity, too, just to complete the picture. But thanks, this is great.
If you want more info on MVC, especially as pertains to Rails, see the MVC article link on the sidebar…
Great job, Amy. Also, a pleasure to meet you. Keep up the great work.
I hope you eventually got a chance to check out http://adactio.com/elsewhere/
It’s the single best example of a Web 2 application I’ve seen to date, in terms of incorporating ajax, rss, and web services, but also creating something that falls back perfectly in the absence of JS support.
(At this very moment, Flickr is "having a massage", so that component of it doesn’t work– the next step with this app would be to have all the data cached locally…)
I was very dissapointed of this 🙂
Thanks. Updated appropriately.
